Gill wants penalties for ‘car meetups’

Aizaz Gill, Republican nominee in the 172nd Legislative District, announced that, if elected, he will push for tough legislation to address the issue of the “car meetups” plaguing Philadelphia.

“These car meetup groups causing havoc across our city are just another symbol of the failure of Larry Krasner to get tough on criminals. His lack of action has emboldened their actions, and it is time to get tough and put the safety of our neighborhoods, families and police first again,” Gill said.

Gill said that, as a House member, he will push for new legislation to increase penalties for those taking part in car meetups involving criminal and dangerous activities such as drag racing and traffic blockages. Gill’s plan includes stronger penalties for offenders, including seizure of vehicles involved in illegal activities (including both those offenders caught at the event and those proven by video footage of the event), loss of driver’s licenses and stiff monetary penalties. He also said that he will fight for additional penalties for those who travel from other states to join these efforts as those people are knowingly traveling to Philadelphia to take part in these events.

Dougherty and Gill Battle for Northeast Philadelphia’s 172nd District

“I first started thinking about running, the thought crossed my mind, when back in December 2022, the House of Representatives had a vote to impeach [Philadelphia DA Larry Krasner]. And our representative, Kevin Boyle, did not vote yes or no.  He took a political dive on this very important issue.”

The neighborhood has seen crime increase since Krasner, a progressive, took over as DA and “if you look at northeast Philadelphia, it is overwhelmingly against Krasner,” said Gill.  I thought, ‘This guy can’t be bothered to represent us.’ Why do we continue voting this guy back in?”

“The epidemic of crime is the biggest issue facing the city,” said Gill.  Krasner’s policies “have been a disaster.  More than 500 homicides in 2021, more than 500 homicides in 2022, more than 400 in 2023.” Philadelphia has 1.5 million people to New York’s 8.26 million but “their homicide numbers are much lower.”

Suspect sought after World War I memorial in Philadelphia vandalized

"It's an absolute shame that we've had this memorial that has been here for years get defaced over some sort of political ideology. And it's wrong. Political ideologies don't give you a reason to deface a World War I memorial. These men gave their lives in defense of our country," said Aizaz Gill, president of the Burholme Town Watch and Civic Association.

Philadelphia World War I memorial vandalized with pro-Hamas message: police

Aizaz Gill, President of the Burholme Civic Association and Townwatch, issued a statement on the vandalism, noting that the paint had already been cleaned up.

"Our community respects our veterans and will never take lightly the cowardly actions of those who defaced our memorial last night. Their actions were not a protest, they were a crime against our community and our nation’s veterans. This morning, when the defacement was discovered, the Burholme Townwatch and Civic Association and residents of Burnholme came together to do what’s right as they always do. Within hours and with the help of our 2nd Philadelphia Police District and CLIP city workers, the terrible vandalism was addressed and its stain removed from our neighborhood. We thank everyone involved with helping in such a timely manner."

Gill wants Krasner gone

After learning that District Attorney Larry Krasner will not seek the death penalty for the alleged killer of Temple Police Officer Christopher Fitzgerald – and refused to even meet with his family – state representative candidate Aizaz Gill called on the state Senate to move forward on the impeachment of Krasner, as well as for a special prosecutor to take over the case.

State Rep Candidate Decries Krasner’s Handling of Murder Case in Temple Officer’s Death

Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner will not seek the death penalty against the man accused of murdering Temple University officer Chris “Fitz” Fitzgerald.

Aizaz Gill, a Republican running for state representative in the Philadelphia/Montgomery County district now held by Rep. Kevin Boyle, is outraged and wants the state to act. He’s calling on the state Senate to move forward with its impeachment trial for Krasner, and for the state to appoint a special prosecutor to take over the case who will seek the death penalty.

The Fitzgerald family has also asked for the death penalty in the case and, if necessary, a special prosecutor to pursue it.

Aizaz Gill speaks at Greater Bustleton Civic League

Aizaz Gill, the Republican candidate in the 172nd Legislative District, told the group he is a graduate of St. Cecilia and Father Judge and serves as president of the Burholme Civic Association. He described the proposed UPS center on Red Lion Road as a “monstrosity” and said he would oppose any tax incentives for the company. He made a donation to the civic association to help the group pay its insurance premium, which rose greatly once the UPS developer sued the GBCL for appealing to stop construction.

Gill faces Democrat Sean Dougherty, who defeated Rep. Kevin Boyle in the primary. Gill criticized Boyle for not voting when the House voted to impeach District Attorney Larry Krasner. Gill argued that he would be the better candidate for law and order than Dougherty, a former public defender. “I will absolutely vote to impeach Larry Krasner,” Gill said.

Aizaz Gill Honored as 2023's Philadelphia Forty Under 40

Gill “got the political bug, as they say,” while volunteering on a campaign as a political science student at Chestnut Hill College. He spent six years working under then-Philadelphia Commissioner Al Schmidt (now acting secretary of the commonwealth) at the Philadelphia City Commissioners Office, hosting community events to educate citizens on a new voting system.

In his Northeast Philadelphia neighborhood, Gill is a board member and president of the Burholme Town Watch and Civic Association. “A minority like me could never have advanced” so far in his home country, Gill reflected. “America has done more for me than any other country could have. So the American Dream is very real for me.”
